Websites with a local top level domain will generally perform better in the local search engines.  Make sure that you use the most appropriate local domain for your target market.

For example, a .com.au website has a better chance of topping an Australian search engine (eg. Google.com.au - pages from Australia), than a website with a foreign top level domain.

If you want to branch off into other markets, then it's a good idea to secure the local domain names for that region, because it can be disadvantageous to use a local domain for an international market.  For example, we hold domain names in Germany, the UK, New Zealand, India, China and the USA for our various brands.
