Use a domain-based email address, not an ISP or free email address

This one is a no-brainer, but many small businesses continue to use ISP email addresses (eg. businessname@bigpond.com, businessname@optusnet.com.au) or free email accounts (businessname@gmail.com, businessname@hotmail.com) instead of using domain-based email addresses (eg. info@businessname.com.au).

It's pretty clear which is more professional from a customer perspective.  I know that I would feel much more comfortable dealing with a company that has its own domain name and domain-based email, than a company that operates from a hotmail address.

Most (if not all) web hosting packages come with an allocation of POP (that stands for 'post office protocol') email addresses.  That means that you can configure your email client (eg. Microsoft Outlook) to send and receive emails using a domain-based email account.

ACTIONS:

  • Review your current email policy
  • Ask your web host about domain-based email addresses
  • Set up domain-based email addresses
  • Configure your email client to send and receive domain-based emails

HOW DID I USE THIS:

All of my domains have domain-based emails and I send/receive using these POP email accounts in Microsoft Outlook.  I currently send and receive from 12 separate POP email accounts.
